How to Get a Swimming Pool Cover to Stay On

pool covers monmouth countyOne of final steps to closing your pool down in the winter is to cover it. A swimming pool cover protects the interior of your pool, and it prevents rain, animals and debris from getting inside. This makes less work when you reopen the pool in the spring or summer. A challenge many pool owners face is getting the pool cover to stay on. Strong winds, heavy rain, and branches or debris can cause many covers to slip off. You can prevent this by using a few accessories to keep your pool cover firmly in place.

- Choose a swimming pool cover made of vinyl, polypropylene or UV-stabilized polyethylene that is the same dimensions as your pool. You may find other covers made of other materials, but these three are durable and more likely to stay on your pool.

- Install tracks around the top of the pool for the cover to fit into. Most pool supply stores carry tracks for this purpose. Because the edge of the cover is secured in the track, there is less chance it will blow off.

- Install a leaf net over the pool cover to prevent buildups of leaves and debris from weighing the pool cover down. This also makes removal of leaves easier because you don’t have to remove the cover to clear them off.

- Remove and empty the leaf net regularly throughout the fall winter months to prevent the leaves and other debris from weighing down the pool cover.

- Vacuum standing water from the pool cover with a pool vacuum. Standing water should be removed as often as is necessary. By vacuuming after every rain, you prevent the weight of the water from forcing the cover to sink into the pool. It’s okay to allow a small amount of water to pool in the center of the cover. This can help keep it in place during high winds.

- Tie the end of a rope to a weighted object, such as a brick or a sand bag. Tie the other end of the string to the loops or grommets on your pool cover.

- Make the string long enough that the weight reaches the ground but also pulls the edges of the cover taut.

- Add more weights around the perimeter of the pool so that they are equally spaced around all sides. The weights will prevent the cover from blowing off in high winds.
