This winter was especially harsh and countless snow storms that seemed to come one and after another. We've been ready for the warm weather and sunshine of summer for months. Now it's time to get your pool ready. When opening your pool working with a professional can save you both time and money in the long run. Consider these tips when opening your pool.

1. Get in touch with a professional

With the amount of snow and bitter cold, your pool opening this year might need special attention. Northeast Spa & Pool Association service company members have the knowledge to deal with these problems. Find a Northeast Spa & Pool Association professional near you.

2. Check their credentials.

This includes the firm’s licensing, certifications, insurance and industry affiliations. Pool service companies in certain states or counties are required to have special licenses as well as Home Improvement Contractor licenses depending on the type of work that they do.

Further, ask the pool service company if it is industry certified. Owners and service managers at top pool service companies are usually Certified Service Professionals (CSP), certified by the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP). This is the highest industry pool service certification achievable and those with a CSP are the most qualified to service your pool and spa.

Also be aware that any company that does work in and around your home--not just pool companies—needs insurance coverage. It should have liability coverage and Workmen’s Compensation coverage for any employee that will work on your property.

3. Ask the service company exactly what it will do when it opens your pool.

Many have an extensive checklist that they will be happy to share with you. Opening the pool is can be rather complex. The water needs to be tested, treated and balanced, the system must be pressure tested and everything must be cleaned.

4. Open your pool and spa sooner rather than later in the season.

In the typical pool that was treated and closed last autumn, chlorine and algaecide levels drop near the end of winter and if we get a hot spell in spring, the pool could experience an algae bloom, which could have been completely avoided by opening the pool now.
